My experience with Service Learning

My experience with service was very positive and uplifting. To know that I was a part of making a change in someones life, especially children, I discovered a new passion to want to help inner city children to succeed in life. At first I didn't know what to expect , I thought I was going to just submit my project , and that was going to be the end. Even , my project is not complete I hope that my project can be something this organization can use now and in the future to conquer the goal of empowering students to want to read better.

What skills I learned through my Service learning Project

For my Service learning project I will create a writing proposal to the organization. This proposal will illustrate how the organization can be an asset to the community. The proposal will outline to facts of the community as well as the statistics that follow the needs of and for the organization in the community.Although, I have done proposals in the past this proposal was challenge. The fact to narrow my goal to one pacific purpose was the most difficult. At the end I was able to incooporate the reason for the proposal and the expectations for my chosen organization.

Service Learning

Service-learning is a teaching method that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. However, service- learning is more than community service. Service-learning is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while developing civic responsibility. From kindergarten to college students, service -learning allows them people to get involved with their communities in a tangible way by integrating service projects with classroom learning.

Service-learning allows students in the educational process to use what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. Service-learning provides a situation for talking about learning in terms of not only what students know but also what they are able to do. It is important to this type of learning to build and reflect on their service experience. This helps students make the connection between classroom and community learning to ensure they understand the extent to which they can impact positive change.

Like all situations, service learning has some drawbacks. Here is a list of potential problems that may accrue while conducting a service learning project

1. Schedule inconsistency
2. lack of skills/desire
3.Students and organization unprepared for service learning
4.Lack of consistency in expectations across all
5. Students don't know options for Service learning
6. Lack of faculty understanding of Service learning

Although I have not encountered these problems, I do believe that most of these service-learning problems can be solved with basic communication. When entering a service learning project ask questions and keep scheduled appointment times, with your teacher or instructor, as well as the community organizer that you are working directly with and this should lead to a success outcome or your service.

My Mission

In my life, my mission is to be myself first and take full responsibility for my actions. I am in control of my life and no one can take that from me. My goals and dreams will be achieved by me taking full steps without procrastination to get there. Failure is not an option because my son needs me; therefore, I will be a good mother. “I can’t", will no longer be in my vocabulary so celebrations are always at the end of my journeys. Future challenges will always be accepted as blessings instead of curses. My integrity will never be tarnished because I will die for what I truly believe in. I will sport a lion heart on my sleeve to get what I want but will share it before selfishness. Yes, I am existing, but I would love to live. In my professional and personal life I will be an asset, not a liability, but I will allow myself to learn from my mistakes. I will, I do, and I can from this day forward.
